The International Fisheries Observer and Monitoring Conference committee look forward to welcoming in person the international scientific and fishery monitoring community to discuss and improve aspects of one of the most challenging and dangerous jobs in natural resource management.

This conference will allows us to discuss our experiences and review our concepts and ideas. The Committee will be seeking to create a program that addresses a spread of issues and professional experiences that attract a broad discipline of delegates. The Committee would therefore like to take this opportunity to invite you to submit an abstract.

Topics can include, but are not restricted to:

  • Why monitor fisheries and what to monitor?
  • Industry engagement with monitoring
  • Monitoring artisanal fisheries
  • Monitoring recreational fisheries
  • New approaches to analysing monitoring data and use of bycatch data
  • Considerations for design and application of observer and monitoring programmes
  • Harmonizing and standardizing observer programmes
  • Observer training, safety and mental health
  • Technology used by observer programs, at-sea and shore-side
  • Operationalizing technology-based monitoring: Learning from programmes around the world
  • The future of monitoring programmes  
  • Briefing and Debriefing Observers
  • COVID impacts on monitoring programmes
  • Strategies employed, lessons learned and best practice recommendations

Presenter information

Oral presentations

Selected authors will be invited to present their papers in an appropriate session. Presenters will be invited to participate in a question-and-answer period at the conclusion of each session.

Poster presentations

Submissions should relate to the themes and authors should nominate poster when submitting their abstract. Abstracts submitted for oral presentations that have not been accepted may be invited to provide a poster presentation.

Full papers

All Authors are expected to submit extended abstracts for the conference proceedings once initial abstracts are accepted. These are approximately two – four pages in length. Initial abstracts will be reproduced if extended abstracts are not provided.

Abstract submission instructions

  • Authors MUST submit a separate abstract for each presentation put forward for consideration.
  • Abstracts must be received no later than 31st October 2022.
  • All abstracts must be submitted electronically via the presentation portal.
  • Faxed abstracts will not be accepted.
  • Abstracts must be no longer than 300 words.
  • The presenter’s biography must be provided and be no longer than 150 words.
  • Notification of Acceptance will be provided in the week of the 14th of November 2022.
  • We also request permission to reproduce your power point presentation on the Conference website when uploading your presentation onsite.
  • The Committee will invite selected Authors to present a full paper, more information will be provided as the abstracts are accepted.
  • At least one author of each accepted submission will agree to register for the conference, pay the appropriate registration fee, and present as scheduled.

Oral presentation

POWERPOINT PREPARATION

Please bring your power point presentation with you on a USB. You need to upload this at least 4 hours before your scheduled presentation with the AV team located at the Hobart Function Centre. The ratio for your power point presentation should be 16:9 Authors are requested to complete the speakers authority form to allow for their presentation to be uploaded to the conference website after the Conference when uploading their presentation.

TIMING

Please check the program for your specific presentation allowance. Presentations are seven minutes in length and timings are strictly enforced. Sessions consistent of several presentations on a specific topic with a Q&A at the end of each session.

SPEAKERS PREPARATION

We have a great team of AV technicians who will be assisting all speakers during the conference.  Presenters are requested to upload their presentation at least 4 hours prior to their presentation time. Note even if you are using your own laptop – please visit the AV tech, so that they can make note of this. It will ensure that all presentations run smoothly; and we will be able to stick to our tight schedule.

Poster presenters

DISPLAY TIMES

Posters are to be installed no later than 6 March 2023 and will be on display through till 10 March 2023. Presenters need to bring their printed poster in A0 size to the registration desk where they will be directed to their allocated poster board. Presenters need to adhere the poster to the poster board by Lunchtime on 6 March 2023 and retrieve their poster after the last session on 10 March 2023. Uncollected posters will be disposed of.

POSTER SIZE  

All poster authors are requested to prepare their posters in an A0 format. Please prepare your poster in PORTRAIT FORMAT.

AFFIXING YOUR POSTER

We will be using display boards that will require either velcro dots or blue tac. We will provide supply on site of each.
